Bowman

Elevations, slope angles and aspects:

6200-9000', slope angles over 35°, north facing aspects

Avalanche activity:

There were at least two natural avalanche cycles, during the most recent wave of snow.

cornice fall

Both involved density changes within new snow.

instability

Cornice falls and widespread shallow slides were observed, both on the ridge and well down into drainages, with activity observed on all north facing aspects.

Slopes skied:

North slide path Yellow jacket ridge and the Bowman trail.

Snow conditions:

New snow amounts of 8"+ increased to more than 18" at 9000'. Winds had created a density inversion within the upper few inches. There was another one at the interface of the new snow and the older, but still recent old snow surface. While the snow is of a lighter density, totals requite a slope angle over 35° for enjoyable skiing.

Weather:

Overcast to obscure skies. Light snowfall all day. Moderate temperatures. Winds from the west, gusting to around 20 mph.

Snow pit:

log pit

Evaluation:

Soft slabs and sluffs indicate good adjustment to loading. Desnisty changes and total amount of new snow suggest a patient approach, allowing time for better settlement.
